Participant Equipment List for program participants

  • What's the phone reception like?
Telstra and Optus have reliable 4G. While there's the occasional "black-spot" you'll get enough coverage for phone calls and messaging but will struggle to stream or download those favourite shows. Vodafone has zero coverage.
  • Is there Wi-Fi?
We understand the importance of staying "connected". We offer WIFI to all adult leaders however we ask that young people embrace and connect with nature and Bornhoffen's beautiful surroundings without this.
  • What's provided in the cabins?
Just a bunk bed. You'll still need a towel, fitted sheet, pillow, sleeping bag or dunna, along with anything else that may make your visit more comfortable.
  • Can you cater for special diets?
Yes, our team of professional caterers can easily cater for most dietery needs.
  • Are the activities safe?
While there are some inherent risks with recreating in the outdoors, PCYC Bornhoffen has a strong safety culture with extensive risk management systems across our operations which meet or exceed the Australian Adventure Activity Standards (AAAS). Our programs are led by outdoor professionals who're trained and qualified across several disciplines with extensive experience in adventure-based learning, group management and leadership. When determining whether a program experience is right for you or your child, we encourage you to consider both the risk and benefits of participating or not participating in the experience. Please contact your event organiser if you have further questions or concerns regarding your program.
  • What is Challenge by Choice?
Challenge By Choice is a programming philosophy recognising the importance of personal choice. When we allow choice, we promote agency and options for participants to be involved to the best of their ability. For some, this may mean they're involved fully or partially in the experience. Challenge by choice is supported throughout all programs and to different degrees depending on the type of program and specific activity.

  • What is Creeking?
Creeking is an aquatic experience involving scrambling, wading, and swimming through the deeper parts of the Nerang River, which flows through the Bornhoffen property. It's similar to a low ropes course activity but within a dynamic natural environment. There are significant opportunities for participants to be involved in safety, decision-making, leadership and teamwork as the group journey together.
  • What can I expect when camping out?
This depends on each program and campsite. Typically, it involves sleeping in tents and on a soft foam bed roll. Amenities are pretty basic, with compostable toilets. While it may sound unpleasant, sleeping out in the bush and gathering around the campfire are memorable experiences and well worth it.

  • What is experiential and adventure-based learning?
Learning from experience is one of the most fundamental and natural means of learning available to everyone (Beard & Wilson, 2018). Adventure-based learning is a sub-discipline of experiential learning and a key framework that underpins all PCYC Leadership Development (LD) programs. Adventure Based Learning or Adventure Education, noted by Prouty (2007) is a unique framework “defined as direct, active and engaging learning experiences that involve the whole person and have real consequences” (Prouty, 2007). On program this presents as a sequence of challenging experiences that help a young person recognise strengths, engage in reflection, tests their resilience, and provides reward from positive risk-taking like walking a trail, paddling a canoe, or abseiling a cliff. A key element to adventure programming is the concept of stretch-zone experiences, with some suggesting that it is this aspect of adventure-based experiences that promotes learning (Panicucci, 2007).
  • Is there media equipment?
We have a digital projector with sound system but often bump into compatibility issues. Please have what you need downloaded to your laptop and a backup on a USB. Note: Our system is not compatible with Mac laptops.
